§ 18-188. Definitions.

  • The following words, terms and phrases, when used in this article, shall have the meanings ascribed to them in this section, except where the context clearly indicates a different meaning:

    Person means an individual, firm, co-partnership, association, or corporation.

    Street means any street, alley, court, lane, bridge, or public place within the corporate limits of the city.

    Taxicab means a vehicle furnished with a driver and carrying passengers for hire, for which public patronage is solicited over and upon the streets of the city. Vehicles commonly known as rent-a-cars, for which a driver is not furnished, shall not be considered as taxicabs, nor shall buses operating over a fixed route.

    Taximeter means any instrument or fare-registering device attached to a taxicab and designed to register mechanically the distance travelled by such vehicle, to record the time the vehicle is in waiting and to indicate upon such record in figures the fare to be charged in dollars and cents.
